If you haven’t heard, the Electronic Dance Music (EDM) Industry is overwhelmingly white male dominated and most of the lineups at major music festivals across the world lack the representation of both minorities and women. I recently went to a music festival this year and as much as I enjoyed it, I was fully aware that all of the performers were white heterosexual males, with the exception of an Australian girl DJ and an all-black male band.
Fighting the Homogeneity in Dance Music
Many groups and organizations, however, are resisting and fighting this lack of diversity. A perfect example of this resistance is Dutty Artz. They started out as a record label and are now a group of multi-disciplinary producers that “aim to fairly present cultural output from eclectic localized communities, to challenge creative industry standards and dominant social norms.”
